the first teleprompter went on air on 4 December 1950. it was a suitcase-sized box of motors and paper, parked beside a studio camera, with a technician crouched behind it turning a knob. every rig since has been an attempt to fix one problem that box created.

the problem before the rig#
television in 1950 was live. there was no tape to fix a fluffed line, so a performer either memorised the script or read it off something.
the something was cue cards. large sheets of card held up beside the lens by a person, swapped by hand as the read progressed. they worked, roughly. but a card sits beside the camera, not in it, so the performer's eyes go sideways. every viewer at home can see it. and a stack of cards has no speed control. it moves when the person holding it decides it moves.
1950: the box beside the camera#
Fred Barton Jr., an actor, had the idea. he was tired of watching performers drown in memorisation. Hubert Schlafly, an engineer, built it. Irving Berlin Kahn handled the business, and the three of them formed the TelePrompTer Corporation.
what Schlafly built in 1950 was mechanical, not electronic. a long paper roll with the script printed on it in large type, wound between two spools inside a case, with a window on the front. a hidden operator ran the motor and matched the scroll to the performer's pace. it ran up to about 50 words per minute.
it went out on the CBS soap opera The First Hundred Years on 4 December 1950. by 1953 Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were using one to read commercials. politicians followed fast: Herbert Hoover read a keynote from one at the Republican National Convention on 4 May 1952, and Dwight Eisenhower used one for a State of the Union address on 4 January 1954.
TelePrompTer rented the rig with an operator, at around $30 an hour. that detail matters more than it looks. from the very first day, prompting was a service you hired, not a thing you owned. the business model is older than the technology it now sits on.
and the box did not solve the eye-line. it made the reading faster and more controllable, but the words were still beside the lens. the performer still looked slightly off camera. the industry had automated the cue card without moving it.
the fix: glass in front of the lens#
the person who moved it was Jess Oppenheimer, the producer and head writer of I Love Lucy.
his idea was optical. put a piece of partially reflective glass in front of the camera lens at 45 degrees. bounce the script off it toward the performer. the performer sees the text floating exactly where the lens is, and looks straight down the barrel while reading. the camera, sitting behind the glass, sees through it and never sees the words.
that is the beam splitter, and it is still how every professional rig works today. Oppenheimer patented it, and licensed the patent to Autocue in the UK in 1955. a separate company, QTV, took it up in the US. glass prompters for public speakers turned up at the 1956 Democratic National Convention, the presidential-podium setup everyone now recognises without knowing what they're looking at.
one consequence came with it, and it's the reason mirror mode exists. a reflection reverses left and right. so the script has to be flipped before it hits the glass, or the performer reads it backwards. in 1955 that meant physically reversing the printing on the paper roll. today it's a chip you tap.
paper, then a camera pointed at paper, then a screen#
the optics were solved in 1955. the display took another thirty years.
Oppenheimer's paper roll survived a long time. Autocue only replaced it in 1969, and the replacement is wonderfully indirect: a closed-circuit video camera pointed at a scrolling paper script, feeding a monitor, feeding the glass. the paper was still there. it had just gained a camera and a television in front of it.
electronic text came in the 1980s. an early computer-driven prompter, CompuPrompt, ran on an Atari 800 in 1982. from there the pattern is the one every industry followed: dedicated hardware, then commodity PC with prompting software, then a flat panel replacing the CRT, then the flat panel getting cheap enough that the rig cost less than the software.
the display kept changing. the glass never did. a 2026 studio rig and a 1956 studio rig are optically the same instrument.
the strange afterlife of the company#
TelePrompTer Corporation is a good footnote, because it stopped being a teleprompter company almost immediately.
it sold the prompting business in the 1960s and put the money into cable television. it merged with H & B American in 1970, and by 1973 it was the largest cable TV provider in the United States. in 1981 it merged into Westinghouse Broadcasting and the cable operations became Group W Cable. the systems it laid are now run by Charter and Comcast.
so the company that gave the device its name spent most of its life doing something else, and the name escaped into the language as a generic word. people say teleprompter the way they say escalator. it was a trademark once.
the phone is the paper roll now#
look at what a phone-based rig actually is and the shape is familiar.
a beam-splitter rig in 2026 is a piece of 45 degree glass, a tray, and a screen under the tray. the screen is a phone. the phone is doing exactly the job the paper roll did: hold the words, move them at the reader's pace, present them to the glass, pre-flipped. the rig roundup covers what to buy, and the setup guide covers driving it.
two things genuinely are new, and both of them delete a person.
the hidden operator is gone. from 1950 until quite recently, matching the scroll to the read was a human job. someone watched your mouth and turned a knob. now the script follows your voice by listening to what you actually said and moving the page to match. that's the operator's job, done on the device, by the device.
and the rental is gone. Schlafly's rig cost $30 an hour with a technician attached. the glass now costs what a piece of glass costs, once. the software part, the part that scrolls the words and flips them, has no marginal cost at all, which is the argument in why a teleprompter should be open source.
what hasn't changed in seventy-six years#
three things, and they're the same three Barton was complaining about.
people can't memorise long scripts under pressure. reading beside the lens looks like reading beside the lens. and the words have to move at the speed of the person talking, not at the speed of a machine.
1950 solved the first with a motor. 1955 solved the second with glass. the third took until now, and it took a microphone rather than a person.
everything else is packaging. the glass in front of your phone is doing the same optical trick Oppenheimer patented for a soundstage, at a price a solo creator can carry in a bag. that's the whole arc: an industrial service, rented by the hour with a technician, became a piece of glass and a file you already wrote.
