how to hold a phone in front of a camera lens

an iPhone 17 Pro Max is 233 grams. put it on the end of an arm 30 centimetres from where the arm clamps, and that mount is fighting far more than 233 grams. that's the whole problem with holding a phone in front of a camera lens, and it's why most of these setups sag by take four.

this is the hardware side. if you want the reading side, the beam-splitter guide covers driving the phone once it's mounted.

the actual problem is torque, not weight#

every mount spec you'll read is a load rating in kilograms. it tells you what the joint holds when the weight hangs straight down, close in. that is not how you mount a prompter.

you mount a prompter out in front of the camera, off to one side, at the end of a reach. the further out it goes, the harder it pulls on the joint, and the number on the box stops describing your situation. a 5 kg arm holding a 233 gram phone sounds like a factor of twenty in your favour. extend that arm to full length and point the phone sideways, and you're not testing the rating any more. you're testing the friction.

that's why arms creep. not because the phone is heavy. because the arm is long.

three things follow from that, and they're most of what you need to know.

  • shorter is better than stronger. a compact arm on a short reach beats a big arm at full extension. always.
  • rig the weight over a support, not out from one. an arm that reaches up and over the lens is fighting less than one that cantilevers out sideways.
  • the failure is slow. a mount that holds for ten seconds can drift two centimetres in five minutes. check between takes, not just at setup.

the phone clamp, on its own#

start at the bottom. a phone clamp is a spring or screw jaw with a 1/4"-20 thread on it. it turns a phone into something a tripod thread can hold.

where it works. on top of a tripod, on a second tripod, on a ball head. anywhere the phone sits over a support rather than out from one.

where it fails. a clamp is a connector, not a positioner. it gets the phone onto a thread and then it's done. everything about getting that thread to lens height is a separate problem, which is the rest of this post. and the cheap spring-jaw versions relax. a screw-tightened jaw stays where you put it.

super clamp plus friction arm#

this is the grip-department answer and it's the one that actually holds.

a Manfrotto 035 Super Clamp bites onto a pole, a tripod leg, a stand, or a table edge, and it's rated to 33.1 lb. it is the least glamorous object here and the one i'd give up last. onto that goes a friction arm, and the phone clamp goes on the end.

for the arm you've got two honest sizes.

the big one. a Manfrotto 244N variable friction arm is 3 kg rated, stretches to 53 cm, and weighs 1.09 kg on its own. one knob locks every joint at once. it is overkill for a phone and that is exactly why it doesn't move.

the small one. SmallRig's magic arm with dual ball heads (3873) is 88 grams, rated 5.5 kg, with anti-twist pins and a magnetic wrench built into the thumb wheel. for a phone at short reach it's the better buy, because it keeps the reach short by simply not being long.

where it works. anywhere there's something rigid to clamp to. a light stand, a C-stand, a rail on a rig, a desk.

where it fails. you need that rigid thing, and it has to be somewhere useful. clamping to a tripod leg puts the phone below and to one side of the lens, which is the eye-line you were trying to fix. and every joint you add is another place to creep. a single-arm run from clamp to phone is stiffer than a clever three-joint path.

the phone cage#

a cage is a metal frame that wraps the phone and covers it in threaded holes and cold shoes. SmallRig's mobile video cage for the iPhone 17 Pro Max (5546) is the current-generation example, with a TPU bumper, a quick-lock mount, multiple 1/4"-20 anti-twist holes, and a lens backplate.

where it works. when the phone needs to carry things, or be grabbed and re-mounted often. the anti-twist holes are the real feature. a single 1/4" screw into a plastic clamp will rotate under load. a cage with two locating points will not.

where it fails. cages are cut per phone model. buy one and you've bought it for that phone. and a cage adds bulk exactly where a beam-splitter tray wants a flat, thin phone. if the phone is going under glass, a cage is usually the wrong direction.

tablet mounts, and the weight problem again#

an iPad reads better from three metres. it also weighs two to three times what a phone does, and the same mount that was comfortable is now near its honest limit.

SmallRig's tablet mount for iPad (2930) takes 7.9 to 12.9 inch tablets, has an Arca-Swiss base, two cold shoes, and weighs 184 grams by itself. it's a good clamp.

where it works. on a tripod, directly, over the centre column. short reach, weight over the support.

where it fails. on an arm. put a large iPad on the end of a 50 cm friction arm and you have built a lever, and the lever wins. if the tablet has to be out in front of the lens, it needs a rig with a tray, not an arm with a clamp. that's the rig roundup territory.

goosenecks and flexible arms#

i'm not going to link one, and that's the recommendation.

a gooseneck is a segmented flexible tube. it's brilliant for a phone beside a bed and wrong for a phone in front of a lens. the mechanism that makes it easy to bend is the mechanism that lets it relax, and a phone at the end of a 40 cm flexible tube will nod downward over minutes. slowly enough that you won't notice until you review the take.

same for the octopus-leg tripods with bendable rubber-wrapped legs. great for wrapping around a railing. not a positioning device.

if a flexible arm is what you have, use it short, point it up rather than out, and check the frame between every take. but if you're buying for this job, buy friction, not flex.

the option people skip: a second tripod#

the phone does not have to be attached to the camera.

a second small tripod, standing directly beside the lens with a phone clamp on top, has no cantilever at all. the weight sits over the legs. nothing creeps because nothing is being held out at a reach. it costs less than a clamp-and-arm chain and it is stiffer than any of them.

where it works. static shots. interviews. anything shot in one place, especially indoors.

where it fails. the moment the camera moves. the whole point of clamping to the camera's own rig is that the prompter travels with it. reframe a shot on a tripod-beside-tripod setup and you're now moving two things and re-aligning your eye-line by hand. it also eats floor space, which matters in a small room and matters more on someone else's set.

the thing none of these fix#

every mount here puts the phone near the lens. none of them put the words on the lens.

that gap is the whole reason beam-splitter rigs exist. a piece of 45 degree glass in front of the lens reflects the phone's screen back at you, so you read and look down the barrel at the same time, and the camera sees straight through the glass. the phone lies flat in a tray, weight fully supported, which also happens to solve every torque problem above by deleting the arm.

so the honest ranking is: if you're shooting talking-head material regularly, the arm is a stopgap and the rig is the answer. the rig roundup covers what to buy at each price. if you're mounting a phone for anything else, the super clamp and a short friction arm is the combination that holds.

what to check before you buy#

  • is there something rigid to clamp to? no clamp point, no clamp-and-arm setup. tripod or rig instead.
  • how far out does the phone have to sit? measure it. if it's past about 20 cm, go up a size in arm, or find a way to shorten it.
  • does the phone rotate under load? one screw into one hole will. look for two locating points, or a clamp with a wide flat face.
  • will the camera move during the shoot? if yes, everything has to share a base with the camera. if no, a second tripod is the cheapest stiff answer.
  • is this a beam-splitter setup? then skip the arms entirely. the rig has a tray.

once it's mounted, mirror the text if there's glass in the path, and drive the scroll from a remote so your hands stay on the camera instead of on a phone you just spent an afternoon aligning.
